Hollókő Castle

Standing on a 400 meters high hill, the 69 meters long, 51 meters wide castle has an irregular plan with a pentagonal tower in the center. Inside the tower has a circular floor plan and its walls have thickness of 3,5 meters. Walking from the gate to the entrance of the tower, there is an elevation of 27,5 meters.

The outer wall starts from the medieval entrance and leads to the rectangular gate tower with a drawbridge. Reaching the outer courtyard was made difficult by many gates and the moats between them. Once the drawbridge was lowered, the outer courtyard became accessible. One of its most visible features is the 4 meters wide, rock-hewn cistern. There is a legend according to which the Hungarian oligarch Máté Csák (Matthew III Csák) and later the Ottomans hid their gold in the cistern. Upon hearing this many treasure hunters visited the castle only to return with empty hands.

Today the rebuilt agricultural building standing in the outer courtyard houses the exhibition displaying photos of the castle before and during its reconstruction. Also on display are the plans of the reconstruction, photos of the tools found during the excavation, carved stones and also a miniature showing how the castle looked like in the 13th century. The original findings of the excavation can be seen in the Ferenc Kubinyi Museum of the Forgách Castle in Szécsény.

From the outer courtyard there are two rows of walls leading to the inner gate. Upon entering the visitors reaches a room with three Gothic stone frames.
