Similarly to the artist's colony in Nagybánya. 8 painters moved in to the house standing at the edge of Szentendre to be inspired by the surroundings and create art here. Later they were joined by more artists and the colony was expanded with new buildings and a park.

Many generations of well known Hungarian artists worked here. Since its renovation in 2008, visitors can also experience the inspiring atmosphere. The old gallery building was demolished and today a new building with glass panels stands in its place, suggesting with its transparency the importance of the colony in the cities life
