Lake Neusiedl
Lake Neusiedl is the third largest lake of Europe, it is situated on the borders of Hungary and Austria. The salt lake’s surface is 315 km2, its average depth is 50-60 cm. Lake Neusiedl is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the fastest warming lakes of Central-Europe.
Attractions
On the Hungarian side there is only one beach, the Lake Neusiedl Swimming Complex which can be reached from Fertőrákos. Here the visitors can go on a cruise trip, canoe, play volleyball or even try surfing. The Austrian side of the lake is more well developed, many towns on the shore have beaches.
The uniquely rich fauna of the lake is protected by national parks from both sides. A total of 300 species of birds can be seen in this area.
History
The shores of the more than 20 000 years lake have been inhabited since the New Stone Age. During history it dried up many times, once due to human interaction (it was dried up by the Romans on Emperor Galerius’ command), another time, in 1866 it disappeared for 3 years due to drought.
