History

The village was first mentioned in written sources in 1181 as Bogan or Pogan.

According to historical sources, it used to belong to the Bishopric of Pécs in the 15th-16th centuries. During the Turkish Occupation the town became deserted and it was repopulated a bit further from its original spot in the 17th century.

In the 18th century, Serbs settled down in Pogány followed by Bosniaks at the turn of the century.

In 1703, it was mentioned as a property of the Bishop of Pécs. In 1714, it belonged to the Parish of Szalánta.

The school was founded in 1845. The building had one classroom and a teacher's apartment. In 1891, the evangelical school was also opened, where the German children studied.
