The museum is housed in a late Baroque (Zopf) style building since 1990. The areas of its exhibitions are local history, archaeology and finde arts. Its collection is made up of more than 220 000 objects, mostly from the eastern part of the county.

A selection of the enormous collection is presented in the so called Visible Storage. Here, visitors can look at the archaeological, ethnographic and art items in an interactive way.
