Vásárosnamény
Vásárosnamény is traditionally said to be the capital of the Bereg area. It is located on the northeastern part of Hungary, in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, where the rivers Tisza, Szamos and Kraszna meet.
The city, divided in two by the Tisza, was founded with the joining of three settlements, Vásárosnamény, Vitka and Gergelyiugornya. On the left shore is the old Namény and Vitka, on the right is Gergelyiugornya known for its holiday resort.
History
Namény was first mentioned in 1215 when one of its villagers was accused of robbery. In 1333 it was referred to as Namen which shows is German origin.
In the 14th century it was owned by the Lónyai family who had a conflict with the Naményi family also living here. In 1494 it was a market town.
In the next centuries, many citizens escaped from the burden of feudalism and became highwaymen knows as „betyárs”.
Attractions
A representative building of the town is the Reformed Church which was built on the remains of a church from the Middle Ages.
An important sight of the city is the Bereg Museum showing the unique archaeological findings, ethnographic items and the history of Bereg. The popular collection is housed in the renovated Tomcsányi Castle.
After a pleasant sightseeing tour we can try one of the local restaurants and taste the gastronomic specialties of the Szatmár-Bereg area. At the end of the day, the visitor have many options on where to rest as the city has many 3 star hotels, motels, campings, guest houses and shore side cabins.
The most appealing part of Vásárosnamény are its waters. The smooth, sandy beaches of Gergelyiugornya attract tens of thousands of visitors every year, and it is also a popular place for water sports. We can explore the untouched natural wonders and the beautiful landscape in a boat trip as well. Besides sunbathing on the beach we can try beach and watersports, and in the evening hours we are entertained by performers and musicians on the stage.
A few hundred meters from the beach is the Atlantika Aquapark. Its water slides and thermal pools offer perfect relaxation for the whole family. From May to September, 3 Anaconda Slides, 2 Shuttle Slides, a wave pool, a thermal pool, two hydro-massage pools, a swimming pool with slides and the sea lion show ensure the entertaining holiday. On weekends the visitors can also use the pools at night.
The Szilva Thermal and Wellness Spa, built on the shore of the River Kraszna in 2008, awaits tourists all year round. The spa has 3 indoors and one outdoors pool, there is also a regeneration bubble bath, saunas, different massage services and a gym. The 45 °C, bicarbonate-alkaline water, erupting from 700 meters deep, has a beneficial effect on digestive, musculoskeletal and gynecological problems but it is also good for recreational purposes.
The alcoholic beverages and foods made of local fruit are also worth trying – the Plum Palinka of Tarpa, the fruit jams and also the local honey and honey walnut. The restaurants offer a taste of the area’s special gastronomy.
