The museum was founded by Archbishop János Simor in 1875 and it is located on the second floor of the Primate’s Palace. It has an enormous collection of fine art similar in size to the Museum of Fine Arts' or the National Gallery's. Besides the works of Hungarian masters, the gallery exhibits paintings by Italian, Dutch, German and Austrian artists from the late medieval to the early modern period. It also has a significant collection of applied arts and graphic work. Some of its well known artworks are the Calvary altarpiece of Tamás Kolozsvári and the passion scenes of Master MS.
